Recent LVP Job
Commercial quality luxury vinyl plank flooring....
Here we present a recent LVP (luxury vinyl plank) flooring job. This home had Armstrong's old Designer Solarian sheet vinyl installed when the house was built. The was probably the best vinyl flooring of it's time because it was inlaid with solid vinyl chips so the color went halfway through the floor.
The main problem with the old, existing vinyl floor was that the surface finish was wearing through so dirt and grime was easily being ground into the vinyl chips below and became very hard to keep clean. The top wear layer had worn through. So, as good as that floor was, it still only lasted 25 years.
With all of the new, top quality luxury vinyl plank floors available these days we had no trouble finding a high end replacement for this home. The new rigid core floors are a perfect fit for kitchens, bathrooms, mud rooms, dining rooms, foyers, basements and just about any room that could get wet. Plus, most of the rigid core flooring can be installed over your current flooring without having to remove it. It can even be installed over ceramic tile! Below are some before and after pictures of Sundance Greystone that we installed in this home.

Prefinished Hardwood Flooring vs Site Finished Hardwood Flooring
Which is better. Prefinished hardwood flooring or site finished hardwood flooring? Well, there are pros and cons to both.
Prefinished hardwood flooring is a wood floor that is finished at the factory. Unfinished hardwood, whether engineered or solid hard wood, will have a urethane finish applied at a finishing facility. This urethane wear layer will be infused with aluminum oxide and UV cured. This system produces a very hard finish that is resistant to scratching and gouging. This type of system will provide the hardest surface for a residential hardwood flooring job.
A site finished hardwood floor will consist of an unfinished solid wood floor of any wood species installed. After installation of the unfinished wood floor, the floor will be sanded down and sealed. After sealing the floor, 2 or more coats of urethane will be applied to finish the floor. One advantage to this type of system is the floor itself will be totally sealed (at least at first it will be). This keeps water from getting between the boards which can cause damage. As time goes by and seasons with varying humidity levels pass, the wood floor itself will expand and contract causing cracks between the individual boards. Now the floor is no longer totally sealed from the top and probably negates the only advantage to this type of wood floor.
Another advantage of a prefinished hardwood flooring product is that the finish is already applied and dry so you can walk all over it once its installed. A site finished product will take days to completely cure and most people will have to stay out of their house during the finishing process. This can be very inconvenient.
Lastly, unlike in the past, prefinished hardwood flooring is more cost effective. It costs less to install a prefinished product than it does to install, sand down and finish an unfinished wood floor. So overall, I would almost always recommend a prefinished wood floor over a site finished wood floor.

Stuff About Flooring Installation...
Well, it seems like the average consumer assumes that all installations are the same. That the installation crew that you get from the big box stores (and you know who you are!!) are of the same quality as you will get from a dedicated flooring company. The consumer feels that the installation you get for $97 for the whole house (or $37 or free for that matter) is of the same exact quality that the mom and pop store will provide. And you can't be farther from the truth!!!
While the big box stores will negotiate the price of their labor down to the bare minimum with their installation crews, the mom and pop stores are busy finding the absolute best installation contractors they can and are willing to pay top dollar for them. After all, we know that a botched installation can follow us through non referrals for a long time. We know that the new flooring job is only as good as the installation of that new floor. We can be the absolute best when it comes to the flooring products we carry, the flooring knowledge we have and the prices we offer but if our installation crew botches the job then we are nothing. Nobody will ever come back to us if we screw up the job at the installation level.
So it is imperative for us smaller flooring companies to have the absolute best, knowledgeable and reliable flooring installers we can find. Trust me, you get what you pay for when it comes to good, honest, capable, reliable and high quality flooring installers. And when you're paying $97 for installation (or less) "THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE GETTING"! A $97 installation company!
Good flooring companies will value their installation crews and pay them accordingly. Not so good flooring companies will try to find the cheapest installation crews around and pay them accordingly. Now, who would you rather have installing new flooring in your home?
All flooring installations are NOT the same. Nuff said.......

So, just like most questions, this question can be answered yes and no. In general, new carpet in a home will not increase the value of a home according to real estate agents I've dealt with (though I'm sure you can find some that will disagree with this premise).
